Link building is probably one of the most monotonous and time consuming exercise to improve your search engine rankings. That is why it can be a very lucrative area for SEO or Link Building companies to make money from website owners simply because they take away the tiring link building process while you can focus on other areas pertinent to your business.
Those who have been managing websites for a long time will realize that every site that links back to yours acts as a “vote” for your content. In addition to that, it is also important to emphasize that quality link building is more important than the quantity of links. Most sites will have a balance of both unless you can spend all the time in the world looking for partner sites to link with you or famous marketers to link to your content or other quality link building practices etc.
Here are some other link building strategies you need to know about.
Get To Know The Trio
Here are a couple of things you should know about link building. In addition to looking at quality link building practices, you need to know that the quality of links are measured according to:
- Trust
- Authority
- Relevance
A great way to look at this in a more practical sense is:
- The number of trusted and authoritative sites linking back to you
- The Relevance of the link – defined by the anchor text itself and the overall content of the page where the link is.
Diversify Your Link Building Efforts
By now, you should know that you must vary your link building efforts. So focus on a variety like:
- Blogs
- Social sites e.g LinkedIn, Facebook, Twitter etc
- Article Directories
- Web 2.0 Sites
- Other directories – RSS, web directories, DMOZ (if you can get through their human screening…)
- PR submissions
- Local business listings
- Local sites
Upward Trend vs Fluctuating Trend of Building Links
Even if you have the energy to do all this, you must also realize that you need to consistently build links which brings us to another matter. Building backlinks too fast will raise red flags. Building backlinks too slowly is not so good either. I don’t know the average number to build links but anything more than 50 links a day will be stretching your luck with the search engines.
A good way to picture this is to go to MajesticSEO and take a look at your cumulated backlinks (usually 30 days). MajesticSEO will show a 30 day trend (or longer) on number of backlinks built for your sites. A good backlink building strategy will have a continuous upward slope trend, whereas one that isn’t so good will look like backlinks are fluctuating up and down over time. (like the diagram below.)
For practical reasons, building links to create that nice upward slope trend is difficult but the importance is to vary your backlink building efforts.
So the key take home message here is to:
- Build backlinks consistently.
- Build backlinks continuously.
- Vary your backlink building efforts. Focus on quality sites!
The Value Of Links Changes Over Time
Even if you have created backlinks, you need to know that the value of links change over time. Most links created will decrease in quality over time especially those built on sites where there is constant change in content like blogs, article directories etc. Those that remain the same are usually on sites where the information will become a permanent resource and won’t change over time.
Those who publish articles to article directories (like I do) will need to keep publishing articles to build a continuous flow of backlinks which isn’t so good if you get sick of writing content all the time. Article directories and blogs are examples since article get archived and forgotten over time.
A much better but quite time consuming approach would be to publish content on pages that are meant for more permanent resources or content. Sites like Wikipedia are good examples. These are sites where your link can even increase in value!
A Quick Summary Of Good to Not So Good Links
In an order from the best kind of links to the not so good ones, I’ve give you an example:
- Get Relevant Resources To Quote You
- Get Bloggers To Mention You
- Get Members of Forums and Social Media Sites to Mention You
- Submitting Comments
- Submitting to Quality Directories
- Submit PR submissions
- Submit articles to quality article sites
The trio of ‘trust, authority and relevance’ still applies to building links.
More Link Building Tools
In addition to the link building (keyword research) tools I have right here, you can do more link research by checking these services out.
OpenSiteExplorer
A great place to do a quick site analysis is at OpenSiteExplorer.Org. This is a free tool and it gives you plenty of data to digest but you need to be a member of SEOMoz (free) to analyze more than 3 links a day.
MajesticSEO
MajesticSEO is the king of providing backlinks information. Most of the backlink data you get from Market Samurai is from MajesticSEO. Thankfully they have free tools you can use to look at backlink trends such as backlink history, top backlinks, top pages and referring domains. Although the free services are a bit more limited that Opensiteexplore, this is also another great tool to use.
PingFarm
Pinging a newly created URL is a quick and easy way to let the search engine know that a new page is created. PingFarm is a fantastic site that works very similar to Pingomatic but you can add many links at once! There’s also an option to add a list of URL from a text file before submitting. This is a great free pinging tool that you must check out!!
DropMyLink
DropMyLink is also another incredible site to help you find links by just keying in your own keywords! This site also allows you to search for relevant sites according to .edu blogs, .gov blogs, keywordluv blogs, directories and a whole lot more relevant sites to your keyword input. I think this is a really useful tool that even if you missed reading those before, you MUST NOT FORGET ABOUT THIS!
I hope you’ve enjoyed this resources!

Hi Bryan,
Thanks for the helpful tips, I guess you could say I’m clueless to the link building process. I still need to find a way to get other bloggers to mention me, thanks again for the advice.

Good job! You have a good choice of link building tools and resources. I am new with DropMyLink and Ping Farm, thanks I will try these two. Also I strongly agree with the ‘trust, authority and relevance’ in building links, without these three I’m sure you’re ruining your search engine placement, obviously.

Hey Kira,
Yeah go ahead try them. I think they are both great tools. And even if you know the trio well enough it still takes practice, trial and error to get it going the right way.

Hey Shaan,
Glad you like them. Make sure you try them out and tell me what you think!
As you mentioned it’s important for links to build over time. It’s important that links grow naturally. Too many at a time looks suspicious to the search engines. The best links are from authority sites that have a high trust factor and have a domain that has aged.
Hey Nick,
I suppose you should give us all a lecture on link building. Since you’ve been saying all the things that I’ve written here, I think I’ve thought my readers the right thing.
Thanks for your input!
