2 Months into 2011, What Have You Done?

February is fast approaching the end. Your 2 months of the year is almost up. Have you started accomplishing the tasks on your New Year resolution list? Or is it just a distant thing of the past that has now been left at the corner of your room, waiting for the next New Year before you start doing something (hopefully) again?

Now let’s talk specifically about the things you want to do for your online business. There are really heaps and heaps of things on the internet that I’m sure you must know already. But are you stuck in the cycle of going through all of that again?

Back To School

I’m digressing a little here but let me talk to you how it was like at school for me. Now you see, when I was in school there were heaps and heaps of subjects to learn. Everything from Maths, Language, Physics to Biology was part of my curriculum when I was in Secondary School. Obviously I’ve known that I wanted to do something related to science and at that time if you were unsure what you wanna do in your life, taking the science stream is the best choice.

studying

But the problem with that is I don’t quite enjoy the way things were taught in school. Everything was based on how well you perform. Grades and academic achievements were the order of the day and if you don’t score X number of A’s, people won’t even blink an eye on you. I hate that! It completely defeats the purpose of learning. To make it worse, it’s about how much you know rather than how much you can apply what you learn. It’s trying to memorize as much as you can and then regurgitating it. Every student was in the rat race of attending tuition classes, scoring excessive number of A’s and those who made it are celebrated and cheered upon. If you are good enough you might even score an interview with a newspaper reporter. Oh how proud you “should” feel for your achievements.

Strangely enough, a lot of those students with strings of good grades and “As” don’t actually have good jobs later on.

There are plenty of things to learn about in school. Likewise, for an online business, there are heaps of things to learn about but there’s no point learning all of that if you don’t apply it or if you don’t do anything about it. I liken a lot of what we read on blogs, websites, ebooks to what I learn in school because it’s spoon-fed. It really feels like some blogging master is standing in front of the class telling all of the students what systems he put into place to earn a living from there. It’s didactic learning. Sitting in front of your laptop reading ebooks without applying what you’ve read is worthless and unless you experiment with those ways, you won’t know if it will ever work.

Didactic learning may be old school but it really isn’t helpful for an individual to learn anything by just sitting down and passively absorb the information. Unless you are a sponge, then yeah probably you could learn better. But I can assure you even if you can absorb information like a sponge, you won’t be successful online.

You’ve Got An Idea???

Let’s say you have an idea but you are pondering over it. Wondering if it would work or not. Let’s say you’ve put all the puzzles together and you have a perfect system to make it work. You are really sure it will work but… you are still questioning yourself over and over again if it will work.

Yesterday I came across a very interesting article on execution and ideas. Derek Sivers says this:

Idea and Execution

AWFUL IDEA = -1
WEAK IDEA = 1
SO-SO IDEA = 5
GOOD IDEA = 10
GREAT IDEA = 15
BRILLIANT IDEA = 20

NO EXECUTION = $1
WEAK EXECUTION = $1000
SO-SO EXECUTION = $10,000
GOOD EXECUTION = $100,000
GREAT EXECUTION = $1,000,000
BRILLIANT EXECUTION = $10,000,000

To make a business, you need to multiply the two.

By Derek Sivers

Derek Siver knows his stuff so yeah and I totally agree with what he says about and idea and executing it. Obviously from his formula, the value of an idea is significantly less if you don’t do anything about it.

I’m sure there’s more than enough knowledge to help you get something up and running, like a niche site or a website for your wedding cake business. It’s just a matter of IF you want to do something about what you know.

Let’s Vote…

So what have you done so far. I’ve started a poll below. Vote guys. This whole poll thing is a new thing I’m trying out. It will be interesting to see the poll results too!

Been working hard both off and online last 6 weeks!

Ranking slowly well for ‘my Everest’ goal. 1 new site almost complete, 1 ranking but new model to be established, 1 new niche still testing monetisation model; if it works another site to be made… so still loads to do this quarter :p

Hows your progress going?

Hey Don,

Thx for voting though! Wow Everest goal. Seems like a really big one :D Hm, working on a new site at the moment, and yeah working my butt off to get those backlinks for my niche site. Loads to do for me too. I have so much things on my mind now, but now I’m just prioritizing, not spreading myself too thin.

Hey Don,

I know what you meant. I think a few commentluv users still don’t know about the problem yet. It’s been mentioned a few times before on other blogs. I just did a small tweak on my feedburner and the problem went straight away.

Hi Bryan

Thanks for the wake-up call. I am achieving some of my goals but still got a way to go with others. It is so easy to get distracted and with all the information going out each day in the blogosphere the time can pass and how much have I done for the day?!

I have to set aside specific amounts of time each day now I am working on a new project! That way I am achieving more and still have time to visit blogs, comment and read information.

Interesting that 60% of your readers are full-steam ahead. Way to go. And I plan to be joining them too ;-)

Hey Patricia,

I agree with you Pat. It’s so easy to get distracted with things online. I’ve greatly reduced the number of info coming in. I mean there are some new stuff online but really the core knowledge is already there. I just need to apply what I learned online and work hard for it. Wow since you commented till now, there are more people voting for “working their butt off…” Hmm I wonder how much honesty is there :P Seems like a lot of my readers are working hard on their projects. I hope so :D

Anyway, would love to dig in what new site you are making in the background!

Hello, Bryan

I actually didn’t forget my new years resolution and I know that there will be a few months until I finish other projects that I have and I can start on the ones I really want to get going.

You know, I too noticed that those people with high grades are the ones most likely to fail, and I am a little panicky right now because I was kind of an straight A student. Also, I too hate the way school is all about the grades when it should actually be all about the teaching. Professors are more inclined to favor and teach to those with higher grades then actually trying to make all the students understand.

How are your “little” projects coming around?

Hey Alex,

Great to hear that you still haven’t forget it yet. Yeah, that was life at school many years ago but yeah I hate the system. Anyway back to my projects. lol, I’ve been spending quite a bit of time on it. Constantly writing articles and building backlinks for my niche sites. Seriously, those things already take enough of my time. Thinking of setting up another one pretty soon. Just need to get my research done properly.

I’m still working on my first project. quite a small project to start with, but I hope to be finished soon and be on page 1.
Once I’ll finish the first the second and third will take half the time.
My ranking are currently page 5 in Google.com.
Working my way up.
Thanks for your blog.

Hey Bryan,

This is totally brilliant. I also like the poll. Last year was the start of my business. The beginning of the year didn’t start out on a good note, but as I made my way towards the end I started blogging, and since then I have been 100 percent motivated to get my word out to the world. I feel like I have so much to say and I’m not going to rest till everyone knows!

God bless,

Hey William,

I’m glad you like the poll! Haha, seems to be a lot of people are working their butt off. Very hardworking I must say. Hopefully that’s the case with my readers. Blogging is hard. I’ve been blogging for a year and I can tell you what may motivate you now may not motivate you later on. You really got to keep yourself going. Seems like you’ve got lots of ideas there too. Wishing you the best!

God Bless you too
