4 Ways to Earn Money at Home Through e-Freelancing Sites

If you are like many women around the country right now, you’re struggling financially. Maybe your husband lost his job or had his hours cut, or maybe you’re just looking for ways to make some extra cash. Although the job market is in the pits right now, the workload for many companies has not diminished. Instead of hiring more full-time employees—which are expensive—many companies have turned to freelancers to help them out with the work they need to do. And in today’s technologically advanced world, you don’t even need to meet face-to-face with clients or go to any office to get your freelance gigs. You can find tons of opportunities over the internet through e-freelancing websites.

1)      oDesk: oDesk is one of the most successful e-freelancing sites on the internet right now. They posts thousands of job each month and set parameters in place that ensure you will get paid for the work you do. One of the biggest headaches of freelancing is collecting payment from your clients. However, since all of your oDesk payment transactions go through oDesk, they can assure you a weekly check for the work you’ve done and the money you are owed. Most of the work on this site tends to be web centered (IT, web design, SEO article writing), so if you have solid training, look no further.

2)      Elance: This is another great site for freelancing, and generally has a bigger variety of jobs than oDesk, ranging from web design and coding, to translation, customer service, marketing, and more. Although, it doesn’t have a guaranteed payment program like oDesk, it is also very reliable and has few problems with payments. It also offers premium placement for job bids for a fee if you want a better chance at landing the job that looks like a great opportunity.

3)      Sologig: This site is very similar to Elance and has a great selection of freelance jobs across a wide spectrum of fields and careers. Audio transcription, medical transcription, article wiring, and more are available. Sologig also has premium services you can pay extra for, but you don’t have to.

4)      Guru: Another great e-freelance site with a variety of jobs, Guru—like oDesk—offers guaranteed payment for those who are wary of potential employers who they have never met.

Things to Watch Out For

Although these sites all offer a large amount of work for a variety of jobs, they are not always the highest paying jobs. So if you are looking to get rich quick, this is not the place for you. However, don’t be discouraged. Many employers will offer a low price for initial work, but will offer steady raises and incentives if you are good at what you do. For some companies, using an e-freelance service is their way of looking for potential full-time employees.

On the other hand, be wary of employers who want you to work on spec (i.e., for free) with the promise of payment for future work. A small free sample is fine if they are really looking to simply test your abilities, but if they keep asking for free work, it’s a scam and you should refuse to do more for them until you get paid.

All in all, freelancing from home offers flexibility and a little extra income between dropping the kids off at school and making dinner—and we could always use a little extra cash.

I know it’s not easy to take job from these sites with high payments when you start, it will take some time to get a good amount of reviews!

Nice post Gunter

Gunter:

i just started with e-lance and I agree they are a great resource. I wrote my article and the next day PAID! The only pitfall I have encountered with them is the bid times. Most jobs are listed for 13-24 days so it takes time to be awarded the job. I like the option of filtering my search results though so I can see jobs ending soonest. Also, the free service only allows 10 bids per month but once you start making money, the fee to increase your status is worth it and minimal!

It’s really hard to start on this freelancers website without paying. You will usually wont get any jobs (unless you somehow bid on a job nobody else wants, unlikely) and to get other jobs you need reviews, which you guest it wont get if you don’t win any auctions.

But perseverance will help most of the times, if not always!

Hey Gunter,

This is a very informative post. I’m very pleased I stumbled upon your site. ( :

You offered greets freelance writing ideas. I thought about freelance writing before I started writing. That can be a very smart way to go, but you have to have a strong grind. Freelance writers usually have to write for a while before the real money starts coming in. The cool thing is that when it starts coming in.. It doesn’t stop it’s passive income forever.

Now that’s pretty awesome too me.

Thanks again.

God bless,
William Veasley

Hi Gunter,
You can also look for blogs that have job boards that list freelance type jobs. Many of these also have listings that are specific towards bloggers. Keisha over at We Blog Better, just wrote up a post about blogs with job boards.

Even freelancing it can sometimes be hard to get those first jobs rolling. When you are brand new it can often be a case of not really having any work to refer to. As you grow on those sites you get positive references and …as you said, it can grow into more lucrative work.

This is a great reference for people starting out, but it is important for them to also know that patience is required. As you get connections and people begin to “know” your work things always will get better.

I have never tried freelancer. Due to tap competition it is very difficult to earn there. Blogging is of course the best and profitable business.

Thank you for taking this step. It would be interesting to know how helpful it has been for you personally. I like the idea of dofollow blogs, but get very irritated when the bulk of the responses are of the kind, “Great post, I enjoyed reading it,” or “Fantastic blog, keep up the good work.”

Thank you for all your comments! It’s very much appreciated.

@Richard Great suggestion! I’ll definitely look into it.
@Jocuri and Steven You’re right. Perseverance and patience are the key!
@Bilal Freelancing is just another option out there. I agree that blogging is another way to make money from home, but just like everything else, it won’t be so easy at first.

Great article.. will sure to try the freelancing websites that you mentioned. I only started blogging but haven’t been earning much.Getting traffic is difficult. Then recently found this http://www.tasksworkers.com. Although the jobs offered there are not high paying but the tasks are easy to do and it only takes minutes to complete them.

I’ve found it next to impossible to get work from any of these sites. They are fine if you want to leverage the difference in cost of living between western and developing economies, but for work in your own country i.e. UK, US etc, forget it. Most jobs go to the lowest overseas bidder.

Hey Dexter,

How bout Fiverr? I really do suggest you read something from Fiverr and even though you get paid 5 dollars per project, its still better than not getting anything at all. I’ve got to update that list there and suggest that to my readers.

Great suggestion! If you’re a fast writer and crank on articles, $5 dollars can add up pretty quick. Like you said, it’s better than nothing. Thanks!

Bryan,

I’m a professional graphic/web designer. $5 wouldn’t get you 10 minutes.

These are all very nice sites. I know of O desk but I have never heard of the others. These sites are great if you want to make some small income by just staying at home and working. I will check out the other sites and try to know more about them
