Blog commenting is one of many useful ways to past the time if you are in one of those days when you can’t think of what to blog or do. Sure it can be a good pastime considering that fact that some blog commenting links are “dofollow” links. Not that “nofollow” links are useless. That being said links are still links but not all links are created equal. That is just one of them. It’s interesting to hear the various opinions on blog commenting. Is it really worth your time? One interesting article about blog commenting on MelvinBlog.com said that once upon a time blog commenting used to be very effective and considered a standard to do so. But things change very quickly and its no longer as effective as before. Melvin further added that this is one of those passing fads on the internet.
DOES IT HELP YOUR BLOG IN THE LONG RUN?
I think blog commenting is still a good thing to do even if its ain’t as effective as before. Although i do agree do a certain extent to Melvin’s post, it is still a worthwhile thing to do. Even if you don’t get good traffic quality or conversions you can still gain some benefits from blog commenting. It really depends on how well you make those comments.
Building A Blog Community
You might have seen the analytics done on Melvin’s blog on comments made on other sites and the results aren’t that impressive. Even from comments made on a reputable blog like johnchow.com, you still don’t see that much of a boost in unique visitor which was a good insight for me on blog commenting. Although conversions are small, i think if you can draw good quality visitors to your website through blog comments, there is good potential to build a community of loyal visitors who will frequent your blog and make it bigger. The importance of writing quality posts can’t be understated here because visitors will recognize the quality of your work and will refer more people to your website through their blog posts or word of mouth.
You will realize that the people who make your blog interesting are the visitors in the long run and they will eventually guide you on the content of your posts. Different blogs are more attuned to different groups of people. Find your blogging style, stick to it and entice your readers with good content so that they can become loyal visitors.
In order to achieve that, you must learn how to comment properly..
HOW YOU SHOULD COMMENT ON BLOGS
Stop the Adulations and Praises
If you are one of those who love to compliment bloggers with the famous one liners “Thanks for the great post”, “Good posts” then you are sure to get the cold feet. If you’ve been searching around, you would find very few comments like that getting approved. I personally don’t approve most of them because I like to know how good or great my posts are. I know they are good but which part of it is and which one isn’t. You might get the impression that I don’t like to be praised but I think commending a blogger for a good post should be done with thought and without haste (which brings me to the next point).
Comment On The Positive or Negative, Elaborate!
This is what you should do. Before you should even think of commenting on someone’s blog make sure you have a good read and understand what the post is all about, and then comment. There is nothing wrong giving constructive criticisms and feedback. Even if i want to commend a blogger for their post, I would compliment them but also elaborate on what I think are the strong points of his post or what I’ve learned from them. If I want to disagree, do so without insulting and degrading them.
Follow Up
If you’ve made a good comment, you will naturally get a reply. Even if you don’t get a reply, it doesn’t mean that you have failed at commenting properly. Personally, i like to elaborate a little bit more on my comments and ask a few questions. Usually I will get replies but otherwise it isn’t really big issue to me. Generally I would prefer to see replies made for my comments then i’ll know that I’ve made a good comment. That is my yardstick for a good comment made. If you’ve got a reply then follow up with them, bloggers would love that interaction and buzz generated from comments especially if there is an active “conversation” going on. This is where you’d build relationships and networks.
Blog commenting may not be as important but it still has its value in terms of building a community for your blog as well as building networks with other sites.
